10W-30 vs 15W-40 Motorcraft Diesel oil. I just changed oil at 4000 miles, 2000 mile towing a 14,000 lb 5th wheel in Florida. I wanted to get out any break in wear metals. Oil cap states to use 10W-30 for normal driving or 5W-40 for severe duty. I read the new blurb from Ford about only using spec WSS-M2C171-F1.
Flow is meaningless with out pressure and pressure is not of much use if flow is restricted! 1) An engine won't run at an oil temperature for very long at -25degF. Maybe a minute or two at the most, on a -40degF day in the Arctic until the oil experiences some heating. 2) Its impossible to induce flow without pressure.
So at sub-zero temps, 15W-50 will flow no slower than a 15-weight oil. This cold-weather behavior is critical to cranking speed and how readily the oil will flow during initial start-up in cold
Many medium and large fleets are ditching 15W-40 heavy duty engine oil for 10W-30. The most common reason for the change is the increase in fuel economy by switching to lower viscosity oil. Fuel economy improvements are correlated with viscosity. Engine oil’s main job is to protect your truck engine. The combustion cycle creates heat, soot
The Synthetic 5w-40 just says that the 40 weight oil will maintain a 40 weight viscosity down to 5 degrees vs. 15 degrees for the conventional. FWIW, I saw absolutely no difference between Rotella conventional and synthetic excpet about $10/gallon less money in my pocket for the Rotella Synthetic.
Is this a trick question? 5W is the answer! Without looking up the difference in Centi-stokes, from a practical standpoint, the thicker oil slows down both compression and rebound. 15W would deliver a slightly less compliant ride, so, high-speed compression could feel more "jarring", and a series of hard bumps would gradually "pack-down" the QY9CzrO.
